Sunnypoint Park, as part of the system of parks along the top of the Scarborough Bluffs, is connected to many natural areas along Lake Ontario in Southwest Scarborough. The park is beloved by the Cliffcrest neighbourhood for its view of Bluffers Park and is approximately 70 metres in elevation above Lake Ontario. Much of the park is a large, mowed grass area, but the park also includes a large wooded section and some areas along the park edges and the top of the ravine that are not mowed. In the early 20th century, the park and surrounding area was used as farmland before the neighbourhood became developed in the mid-century. The southwest “corner” of the park was originally a residential property where a home was in danger of collapse due to erosion of the Bluffs. It was expropriated and added to the park in the 1980s.
This area of the Scarborough Bluffs is an important part of the migratory route of birds and butterflies, particularly the Monarch. There are a variety of native trees, such as basswood and black walnut, as well as many native species, including zigzag goldenrod, asters, and common milkweed. However, this site is at a critical juncture as invasive species, such as dog-strangling vine and garlic mustard, are starting to crowd out the desirable native species. For this reason, Sunnypoint Park has become a 2022 Toronto Nature Steward site. The neighbourhood is working hard to learn to identify and remove invasive species as well as host community clean-ups in the park. We are always happy to welcome new people who would like to join our merry group of stewards. For more information, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
